SUMMARY:Boston Sea Rovers 2014
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Caradonna Dive Adventures\, Ocean Doctor president\, Dr. David E. Guggenheim will present a 45-minute seminar on “Legal Travel to Cuba for U.S. Citizens” at Boston Sea Rovers 2014\, detailing Ocean Doctor’s Cuba Travel Program featuring Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen. \nThe Boston Sea Rovers is a not for profit volunteer organization dedicated to increasing awareness and appreciation of the marine environment. We are one of the oldest and most distinguished underwater clubs in America \, and have a worldwide reputation of excellence. While the membership has changed repeatedly over the years\, we still hold true to a pledge that was inspired in 1954\, and we remain dedicated to “Raising the Level of Knowledge of the Underwater World”. In order to achieve this lofty goal\, the early members of the club designed and invented the first underwater film show available to the general public. They called that first production a Clinic\, and we have held the event every year since. \nThe Clinic now comprises an entire weekend\, which is typically the second full weekend in March. The event is held at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel-Boston North Shore. The Clinic consists of a world renowned film festival where international underwater film makers present and premier their most recent works\, over forty daytime seminars covering a wide variety of topics\, workshops focused on hands-on training\, and an exhibit hall filled with equipment\, travel destinations\, dive clubs\, and more. \nFounded when SCUBA diving was still in its infancy\, The Boston Sea Rovers are a group of people from diverse and varied backgrounds\, who share the common bond of a love for diving and for the ocean. \n

SUMMARY:Aqua-Nuts Dive Club - Horsham\, Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:A Living Time Machine: Cuba’s Spectacular Ocean Ecosystems and the Hope They Offer the World \nDr. Guggenheim directs Cuba Conservancy\, an Ocean Doctor Program\, and is in his 14th year leading research and conservation efforts in Cuba\, a joint effort with Cuba’s Center for Coastal Ecosystem Research and the University of Havana’s Center for Marine Research. His work was recently featured on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper\, on the PBS Nature series and on NPR. \nIn a world of corals dead and dying\, Cuba’s marine ecosystems are spectacularly healthy\, a Jurassic Park-like experience teeming with endangered species seldom seen elsewhere in the Caribbean\, including bountiful sharks and grouper. We visit Gardens of the Queen\, named by Christopher Columbus 500 years ago to honor Spain’s Queen Isabella — truly a living time machine — and explore why this area is so healthy and what the implications are for ocean ecosystems around the world. Gardens of the Queen is Cuba’s first marine protected area and the Caribbean’s largest. \nDr. Guggenheim also presents Ocean Doctor’s new Cuba Travel Program which\, for the first time\, is bringing divers from the U.S. to Cuba legally as part of a people-to-people educational program\, to dive in the Gardens of the Queen and meet the Cuban scientists and conservation professionals who are working to protect it. \nLearn more: \nOcean Doctor’s Cuba Conservancy Program: http://oceandoctor.org/cuba \nOcean Doctor’s Cuba Travel Program: http://oceandoctor.org/gardens

SUMMARY:SCUBA & H2O Adventure Show 2014 - Seattle\, Washington
DESCRIPTION:Ocean Doctor president\, Dr. David E. Guggenheim\,presents\, A Living Time Machine: Cuba’s Spectacular Ocean Ecosystems and the Hope they Offer the World.”   \nNamed by Christopher Columbus to honor Queen Isabella of Spain\, the Gardens of the Queen (Jardines de la Reina) are one of the healthiest coral reef ecosystems remaining in the Caribbean. In a world where coral reefs are dying\, the corals in the Gardens of the Queen are flourishing\, and like a living time machine\, the Gardens likely resemble the healthy coral reefs Columbus saw\, avoiding the rapid decline so common throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world. \nWhat makes this ecosystem so healthy? What are the implications for coral reefs elsewhere? What is the role of diving in this special ecosystem? And how is this ecosystem bringing Americans and Cubans closer together? What is so compelling about this Cuban ecosystem that 60 Minutes sent Anderson Cooper and a camera crew to work with Dr. Guggenheim and Cuban scientists? \nNow at last\, American divers can legally visit Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen as part of a special\, licensed educational people-to-people program led by Ocean Doctor and hosted by Avalon Cuban Diving Centers in the heart of Gardens of the Queen. You can find details at OceanDoctor.org/Gardens. \nDr. Guggenheim’s talk will be at the Poseidon Pavilion

SUMMARY:Earth Day 2014: Whales at the White House
DESCRIPTION:“Mz. Blue\,” a Life-Sized 90-Foot Inflatable Blue Whale\, in Washington\, DC’s Freedom Plaza in 2013 \nJoin Dr. Sylvia A. Earle\, Founder\, Mission Blue/Sylvia Earle Alliance\, along with Dr. David E. Guggenheim\, the “Ocean Doctor” (president of Ocean Doctor and Board Member of the Great Whale Conservancy)\, with Michael Fishbach and Dr. Gershon Cohen\, Co-Directors of the Great Whale Conservancy\, for a unique Earth Day event on Tuesday\, April 22nd\, 2014 (Earth Day) at 2pm ET on the Ellipse below the South Lawn of the White House in Washington\, DC. \n\nSpecial Guest of Honor: Mz Blue\, Great Whale Conservancy’s life-size 90-foot blue whale inflatable (see photo to right)! \nPurpose:  To ask President Obama to direct the Navy to remove its objection to the use of an alternate shipping lane in California waters to reduce the killing of blue whales from ship strikes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarth Day Speakers\n\n\n\nDr. Sylvia A. Earle\, Founder\, Mission Blue/Sylvia Earle Alliance; National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence \n\n\nDr. Gershon Cohen\, Co-Director\, Great Whale Conservancy \n\n\nMichael Fishbach\, Co-Director\, Great Whale Conservancy \n\n\nDr. David E. Guggenheim\, President\, Ocean Doctor; Board Member\, Great Whale Conservancy \n\n\n\n\nBackground: The officially sanctioned commercial shipping transit lane along the Southern California coast cuts through critical blue whale feeding habitat.  “Ship strikes” – collisions between the whales and the ships result in many whale deaths. \nBlue whales may be the largest animal to ever live on Earth\, and they are remarkably intelligent and agile\, but they are dwarfed by these ships which are usually unaware a strike has even occurred. No one knows why the blue whales are often unable to avoid the ships\, it might be due to the noise from multiple vessels or because they are so focused on feeding – blue whales must consume tons of krill every day to survive.    There is an alternate shipping route\, supported by the Coast Guard\, which if used during the four critical months of July-October could reduce the number of ship strikes on blue whales by 80-90%.  Members of the industry have stated their willingness to consider using an alternate shipping lane if the Navy’s objection is dropped.    Great Whale Conservancy will be submitting a letter to the White House regarding this matter signed by NGO’s working around the world to protect whales\, along with ~120\,000 signatures from an on-line petition.   \n\n\n\n[youtube E1SwJfny2qs 560 340]\n\n\n\n  \nDownload the Press Release:\n\n\n\n[wpfilebase tag=file id=37 tpl=’dg_custom1′ /]\n\n\n                                                                                                                       \n\n\n\n  \n  \n

Guggenheim\, has been named as a finalist in the 2014 BLUE Ocean Film Festival and will be screened during the week-long event in St. Petersburg\, Florida\, November 3-9\, 2014. The Ocean Doctor team will be at the BLUE Ocean Film Festival all week — look for the Ocean Doctor booth. \nAbout the Film\nWhile on an expedition in the South Atlantic from the tip of South America to the tip of South Africa\, marine scientist  witnessed – and filmed – the worst environmental disaster of his life. En route to a little-known cluster of islands\, his ship received a distress call\, requesting assistance in rescuing the crew from a Maltese freighter that had somehow managed to run aground at Nightingale Island\, part of what is considered the most remote inhabited island group in the world\, Tristan da Cunha. The wreck unleashed a catastrophic oil spill at the doorstep of the second largest concentration of seabirds in the world\, home to 65 percent of the world’s population of the endangered Northern Rockhopper penguin. Beloved and iconic\, it is a surprise to many that most penguin species are in trouble and have declined by as much as 90 percent since the 1950s. Equally surprising is a growing global threat\, hiding in plain sight: The common cargo vessel\, whose dismal safety record is proving over and over again that it doesn’t take a supertanker or oil well blowout to create an oil spill disaster. Disaster at Nightingale is a film about an ecological catastrophe that few know occurred\, in a place that few know exists\, resulting from a global threat that few are aware of. The film reveals why the disaster occurred\, its unthinkable aftermath\, and how such “statistically impossible” disasters aren’t nearly as impossible as we once thought. \nSee the Trailer:\n[youtube rd257H1pGxE 590 356 ] \nAbout BLUE\n[pullquote]“More than films\, more than a celebration of all things wet\, the Blue Ocean Film Festival brings together a potent mix of artists\, scientists\, conservationists\, decision makers\, industry leaders\, inquisitive teachers\, lively kids and more. DESCRIPTION:Presented with the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development \nDiscussion with Marine Biologist Dr. David E. Guggenheim and Cuban representatives \n“60 Minutes” Segment with Anderson Cooper \nCuba’s exceptionally healthy and vibrant ecosystems illustrate the advantages of Cuba’s taking a different path from its more industrialized neighbors.
