SUMMARY:A Living Time Machine: Cuba’s Remarkable Ocean Ecosystems and and the Hope They Offer Florida and the World
DESCRIPTION:A Living  Time Machine: Cuba’s Remarkable  Ocean Ecosystems and and the Hope They Offer  Florida and the World\nDavid E. Guggenheim\, Ph.D.\n \nGuggenheim is founder and president of Ocean Doctor\, a non-profit conservation organization in Washington\, DC\, where he is in his 17th year leading research and conservation efforts in Cuba focused on coastal communities and protecting coral reef ecosystems. His work has been featured on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper\, on the PBS\nNature series and on NPR.\n \nWhile 50 percent of the Caribbean’s corals have vanished since 1970\, many of Cuba’s marine ecosystems remain spectacularly healthy\, a Jurassic Park-like experience teeming with endangered species seldom seen elsewhere\nin the Caribbean\, including bountiful sharks and grouper…truly a living time machine. Dr. Guggenheim\nexplores why Cuba’s ecosystems remain so healthy\, the threat posed by the “tsunami” of Americans now pouring into the island as relations normalize between Cuba and the U.S\, and what is being done to ensure that Cuba avoids\nthe mistakes made elsewhere in the Caribbean over the past half century.

SUMMARY:Advancing Environmental Sustainability and Historic Preservation in Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Advancing Environmental Sustainability and Historic Preservation in Cuba\nCuba-U.S. Collaboration in a New Era of Change\nMonday\, June 4\, 2018 – 1:00pm – 5:00pm \nCarnegie Endowment for International Peace – 1779 Massachusetts Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20036 \nCuba has developed differently from any other country in the Caribbean. Many of its natural ecosystems remain remarkably healthy\, and the country’s cultural heritage remains authentic and largely intact. The efforts to normalize relations between Cuba and the United States by President Obama fueled dramatic growth in tourism and interest in investment on the island\, sparking concern that Cuba now faced the same scale of pressures that have resulted in environmental and heritage degradation throughout the Caribbean. With the advent of the Trump presidency and chilling of relations\, some of these pressures have waned\, but likely only temporarily. \nThis public event explores opportunities for small-scale\, collaborative initiatives to successfully advance environmental sustainability and historic preservation in Cuba during this period of political uncertainty. It includes the public release of a new report by Ocean Doctor and the Center for International Policy\, A Century of Unsustainable Tourism in the Caribbean: Lessons Learned and Opportunities for Cuba. \nSpeakers \nIntroductory Remarks\n\nSalih Booker\, Executive Director\, Center for International Policy\nWelcome\nHis Excellency Jose R. SUMMARY:Ocean Doctor at Grace\, Race & Renewing the Commons at Wollam Gardens\, Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Ocean Doctor President Dr. David E. Guggenheim is a featured speaker at\, Grace\, Race & Renewing the Commons\, a literary-and-activism-inspired festival featuring speakers and workshops at Wollam Gardens – a sustainable locavore farm and flower destination. The event will cultivate conversations\, ideas\, and strategies to think out loud about ways to answer some of the most pressing challenges facing all of us today. Dr. Guggenheim’s remarks will include readings from his forthcoming book\, DEEP in Enemy Territory: An American Marine Scientist’s 20-Year Odyssey in Cuba and the Race to Save the World’s Coral Reefs. \nWhat are some of the historic factors driving conversation in the public square about race\, and how can we use those\, as well as today’s developments\, to create broader awareness and dialogue? In agriculture\, what can we do to adapt to changing climate conditions? Can we devise new ways based on old practices to think about sharing common natural resources? What is the role of ordinary citizens in creating dialogue with policymakers about sustaining the oceans and slowing the extinction of species? How might we bring grace to our civic discourse about the opioid epidemic? What is the role of humor in countering alternative facts? Taking inspiration from our three themes of grace\, race\, and renewing the commons\, these are just a few of the questions we’ll be exploring. \nPanelists and Workshop Hosts Include: \nClarence Lusane – Department of Political Science at Howard University; author\, The Black History of the White House\, Hitler’s Black Victims\nThomas Lovejoy – Professor\, George Mason University; originator of the term “biodiversity”\nDavid E. Guggenheim\, adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University\, Advanced Academic Programs\, and founder and president of the nonprofit organization\, Ocean Doctor\, dedicated to the protection and restoration of coral reef ecosystems. Dr. Guggenheim will also be sharing excerpts of his new book\, “The Remarkable Reefs of Cuba: Hopeful Stories From the Ocean Doctor.” \nAlso featured will be free wine tastings by Proud Pour\, whose wines and cider support 22 environmental nonprofits protecting bees\, soil\, wild oysters\, sea turtles\, and coral reefs. Their products are high quality and sustainably grown\, a celebration of good living and our beautiful planet. \nFree popcorn will be served! \nVisitors can set up beach chairs in the parking lot around 7:30pm. Dr. Guggenheim will speak at 8:00pm and the film screening begins at sundown (approximately 9:00pm). \nAbout “Chasing Coral” \n\n\nA team of divers\, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why corals are vanishing at an unprecedented rate.\nThis film is the product of 500+ hours of underwater footage\, coral bleaching submissions from volunteers in 30 countries\, and support from more than 500 people in various locations around the world.\nBetween 2014 – 2017\, Chasing Coral captured the most severe bleaching event in recorded history. During these years\, 75% of corals suffered or died from heat stress brought on by climate change.\nIt is predicted that if nothing changes\, by 2034 there will be severe bleaching events every year and by 2050\, 90% of reefs could be lost.\n\nDownload Event Flyer: [wpfilebase tag=file id=61 /]

SUMMARY:South Florida Divers
DESCRIPTION:Cuba’s Remarkable Reefs: Hopeful Stories from the Ocean Doctor \nDr. David E. Guggenheim\, founder and president of Ocean Doctor and adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University\, discusses his new book\, “Cuba’s Remarkable Reefs: Hopeful Stories from the Ocean Doctor.” (Prometheus Books). \nFrom the Publisher:\n \nSince 1970\, the Caribbean has lost half its coral reefs\, an ominous and accelerating phenomenon reflected around the world. Beyond the heartbreak of the loss of such exquisite beauty\, losing coral reefs means the annual loss of billions of dollars from the global economy and the end of a way of life for the billions who depend on these ecosystems. \nMarine scientist and conservation leader Dr. David E. Guggenheim has had a front-row seat to this disaster. But when he began a new chapter of his career in Cuba\, he found something completely unexpected: hope. After years of watching reefs deteriorate\, Guggenheim was astonished to come face-to-face with Cuba’s remarkably healthy coral reefs overflowing with marine life. Guggenheim reveals the hidden lessons of Cuba’s reefs that could help rescue coral reefs around the world. Understanding why takes us on a journey through the island’s unique history – and our own. \nWhile the past 60 years have seen the worst decline in ocean health in human history\, Cuba’s oceans and coral reefs remain remarkably healthy\, a living laboratory little seen by this generation of scientists. Which begs the question—Why are Cuba’s ocean waters so healthy? The answer is deeply entwined with the country’s extraordinary and singularly unique history\, from its dramatic political past to its world-class environmental protections influenced by an unlikely partner\, Jacques Cousteau. \nGuggenheim tells the story of the demise of the world’s ocean ecosystems\, the hard work of those trying desperately to save it\, and an unexpected beacon of hope from an island full of mystery and surprise. \nAbout South Florida Divers: \nFounded in 1974\, South Florida Divers is a dive club with a long legacy of diving Florida’s reefs and wrecks. Learn by diving with a skilled group of divers who know the dive boats and have worked with dive operators on the east and west coast of Florida. We participate in local reef clean-ups\, reef and fish surveys\, wreck sinking\, and turtle-nest monitoring. We aim to protect our reefs and help our members become better divers.
