SUMMARY:DEMA Show 2013 - Orlando\, Florida
DESCRIPTION:[jamiesocial] \nOcean Doctor president\, Dr. David E. Guggenheim\, will present\, To Scuba in Cuba: Why Cuban Coral Reefs are Still Pristine and How American Ecotourism can Help Keep Them Healthy at the 2013 DEMA show in Orlando\, Florida\, November 6-9. \nNamed by Christopher Columbus to honor Queen Isabel\, Gardens of the Queen (Jardines de la Reina) are one of the healthiest coral reef ecosystems remaining in the Caribbean. In a world where coral reefs are dying\, the corals in the Gardens of the Queen are flourishing\, and like a living time machine\, the Gardens likely resemble the healthy coral reefs Columbus saw\, avoiding the rapid decline so common throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world. \nWhat makes this ecosystem so healthy? What are the implications for coral reefs elsewhere? What is the role of diving in this special ecosystem? And how is this ecosystem bringing Americans and Cubans closer together? What is so compelling about this Cuban ecosystem that 60 MINUTES sent Anderson Cooper and a camera crew to work with Dr. Guggenheim and Cuban scientists? \nNow at last\, American divers can legally visit Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen as part of a special\, licensed educational people-to-people program led by Ocean Doctor and hosted by Avalon Cuban Diving Centers in the heart of Gardens of the Queen. You can find details at OceanDoctor.org/Gardens Dr. Guggenheim will be at DEMA 2013 with the team from Avalon Cuban Diving Centers (Booth 833) to present this unique program and answer questions. \nDEMA Show 2013 is the only international trade-only event for the diving\, action water sports and travel industries. \n  \n

SUMMARY:4th Annual New York Wildlife Conservation Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \nOcean Doctor president\, Dr. David E. Guggenheim will present his documentary film\, Disaster at Nightingale: How Tragedy Found the World’s Remotest Island at the 4th Annual New York Wildlife Conservation Film Festival\, October 15-20\, 2013. He will also be taking part in a special panel discussion on Sunday\, October 20\, 2013 during the festival. \n\n\n\n\nWhile on an expedition in the South Atlantic from the tip of South America to the tip of South Africa\, marine scientist Dr. David E. Guggenheim witnessed and filmed the worst environmental disaster of his life: A shipwreck that unleashed a catastrophic oil spill at the doorstep of the second largest concentration of seabirds in the world\, home to 65 percent of the world’s population of the endangered Northern Rockhopper penguin. Disaster at Nightingale tells the story of an ecological catastrophe that few know occurred\, in a place that few know exists\, resulting from a growing global threat that few are aware of.

SUMMARY:Blue Vision Summit 2013 - Washington\, DC
DESCRIPTION:Ocean Doctor will be participating in the fourth Blue Vision Summit May 13-16\, 2013. \nOver the years\, Blue Frontier Campaign has worked with a broad network of these marine grassroots organizations and individuals – known as “Seaweed Rebels” – to disseminate information at local\, regional\, and national levels. There are now some 2\,000 blue groups working on ocean and coastal conservation but still largely operating in isolation\, and with little coordinated effort. Blue Frontier Campaign focuses on networking and promoting the common works needed among these groups. \nThe Blue Vision Summits are now established forums that have helped increase outreach to marine conservation groups\, coastal communities\, recreational ocean users\, maritime workers\, coastal tribes\, public health advocates\, marine science centers\, elected officials and other potential constituents and allies.

SUMMARY:Cuba's Gardens of the Queen: A Living Time Machine and Hope for the Future of the World's Coral Reefs | DEMA 2012 - Las Vegas\, Nevada
DESCRIPTION:[social_share/]\n\n\n\nDr. David E. Guggenheim\, the “Ocean Doctor\,” and representatives of Cuba’s Avalon Diving Centers present “Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen: A Living Time Machine and Hope for the Future of the World’s Coral Reefs.” \nNamed by Christopher Columbus to honor Queen Isabel\, Jardines de la Reina or Gardens of the Queen are one of the healthiest coral reef ecosystems remaining in the Caribbean. Can American divers visit Cuba’s Jardines de la Reina? \nVenue to be Announced

SUMMARY:World Affairs Council of Western Michigan -- Great Decisions Foreign Policy Series: "State of the Oceans" (Keynote)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David E. Guggenheim will kick off the 2012 Great Decisions Foreign Policy Series\, an annual event hosted by the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. Dr. Guggenheim will speak on the State of the Oceans on February 6th\, 2012. \nThe Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series was launched in the early 1960s and is a centerpiece for the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. \nThe “State of the Oceans” is one of eight topics chosen by the Foreign Policy Association which produces the Great Decisions events and publications: \nThe world’s oceans are essential to life on earth\, and are tremendously sensitive to global climate change. What are the consequences of climate change on oceanic factors like biodiversity\, sea levels and extreme weather systems? How can the U.S. and its international partners address the emerging challenges to this shared resource? \nThe World Affairs Council is dedicated to educating people in western Michigan about other countries\, cultures and regions of the world\, as well as providing a forum for discussion of critical foreign policy issues facing this country.

SUMMARY:Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education 27th Annual Conference: "Exploring our Blue Planet" (Keynote)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David E. Guggenheim will deliver the keynote address to the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education’s (ANJEE’s) 27th Annual Environmental Education Conference\, Exploring our Blue Planet. \nThe conference takes place January 27 and 28\, 2012 (Preconference workshops: January 26\, 2012) at the Wyndham Princeton Forrestal Hotel and Conference Center\, Plainsboro\, NJ. \nWhile many around us are going green\, ANJEE is going Blue for 2012! \nOur world has been called “The Blue Planet” and “The Water Planet” for good reason; it is the only known planet with any significant amount of water and thus the only planet we know of that can sustain life. This conference will investigate water in many different ways – as a resource for life\, as a habitat\, and as a crucial resource that requires protection from overuse and pollution. The science\, curricula\, issues\, and politics of water will be explored\, along with many other environmental education topics. \nThe ANJEE Conference is a professional development conference for all environmental educators\, formal and nonformal alike. We welcome teachers and administrators from Pre-K to university level; and leadership and staff from nature centers\, after-school programs\, museums\, government agencies\, zoos\, non-profits and you! \nOfficial conference site: http://www.anjee.net/conference/index.html

SUMMARY:Caribbean Environment: From Cuba's Paradise to Haiti's Nightmare\, and Everything in Between (SEJ 2011\, Miami)
DESCRIPTION:Caribbean Environment: From Cuba’s Paradise to Haiti’s Nightmare\, and Everything in Between \nSaturday October 22: 10:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon \nINTERCONTINENTAL MIAMI\n100 CHOPIN PLAZA ? MIAMI\, FL\, 33131 \nCaribbean Environment: From Cuba’s “Paradise” to Haiti’s Nightmare \nFrom deforestation and pollution\, to overpopulation\, loss of resources and lack of protection\, many of the Caribbean nations face serious environmental problems now\, and worse in the future. With 95 percent reef loss\, Haiti lacks fish to feed its population. The largest fish found in those waters in recent years was six inches long. Reef Check has begun a project in Haiti to start a conservation area there\, and is training people\, which means they first need to learn how to swim. Cuba lives between an invasive species nightmare and a temporary botanical safe haven\, but for how long? Puerto Rico’s overdevelopment threatens to pave the entire island. We’ll examine the present situation and any remediation efforts being undertaken in this area\, so crucial for tourism and the fishing industry. \nModerator: Susan Soltero\, Univision.Net (Puerto Rico) \nSpeakers: \nDavid Guggenheim\, the “Ocean Doctor;” Senior Fellow\, The Ocean Foundation; and Director\, Cuba Marine Research & Conservation Program \nGregor Hodgson\, Founder and Executive Director\, Reef Check \nNadine Patrice\, Executive Director\, Operation Green Leaves Inc. \n  \nRoom: Sandringham \n

MIAMI\, FL\, 33131 \nCuba Begins Oil Drilling 40 Miles Off U.S. Shores \nIf you think the BP spill did serious damage to fishing and tourism\, imagine an unregulated drilling project just 40-50 miles up-current from South Florida pristine beaches and world-renowned fishing industry. Cuba is scheduled to begin drilling just weeks after the SEJ conference. Will the U.S. be able to influence its safety standards despite the U.S. embargo and 50 years of tension? Could the Castro brothers use the project as a political tool in their volatile relationship with Cuba’s stated arch enemy? There are new efforts under way right now to create a dialogue between Cuba\, the US and Mexico. And panelists will give us an insider’s analysis of America’s vulnerable position. \nModerator: Helen Aguirre Ferre\, Co-host “Prohibido Callarse\,” WQBA 1140 AM Univision Radio (Miami); and Host of “Issues\,” WPBT2\, PBS Affiliate (Miami) \nSpeakers: \nDavid Guggenheim\, the “Ocean Doctor;” Senior Fellow\, The Ocean Foundation; and Director\, Cuba Marine Research & Conservation Program \nJorge Pi??n\, Oil and Gas Expert and Visiting Research Fellow\, Cuban Research Institute\, Latin American and Caribbean Center\, Florida International University \nJohn Proni\, Executive Director\, Applied Research Center\, Florida International University; and former Director\, Ocean Chemistry Division\, Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory\, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration \nDaniel Whittle\, Cuba Program Director\, Environmental Defense Fund \n  \nRoom: Sandringham
