26 May 2010 (Vol. 4 No. 2) GULF OIL DISASTER UPDATE

Around the Gulf in 7 Minutes

An Underwater Tour of the Gulf of Mexico

This video was produced for opening of the first Gulf of Mexico Summit in 2006 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was recently shown to Congress as part of Dr. Sylvia Earle’s testimony before Congress

As the BP Deepwater Horizon crisis continues to unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, it is important to consider the impact on the unseen vibrant ecosystems that lie in deep water below the surface. This video is an underwater tour of the Gulf of Mexico by submarine and scuba, highlighting the vast diversity of marine life throughout the Gulf, from the surface to depths of nearly 2,000 feet. The tour begins in the northern Gulf, tracks south along the west Florida shelf, to northwestern Cuba and finally west to Veracruz, Mexico.

The video was produced for the opening ceremony of the first “State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit” held in 2006 in Corpus Christi, Texas. This video was also shown at the May 19, 2010 U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, “Deepwater Horizon: Oil Spill Prevention and Response Measures, and Natural Resource Impacts” as part of the testimony of Dr. Sylvia A. Earle. See: http://transportation.house.gov/heari…

Cuba at Risk from Gulf Oil Spill

BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico Could Contaminate Cuban Waters and Coastlines

We continue to monitor the trajectory of the massive oil spill with grave concern for the damage now clearly occurring along the Gulf states’ coastlines and wetlands. Some oil has entered the Gulf’s Loop Current, and in the event that a significant amount of oil enters the Current, we are focused downstream where the oil could be transported in a region we have been working for the past decade: Northwestern Cuba. As we stated in the last issue of ExpeditionDispatch, oil from the spill represents an unprecedented threat to Cuba’s marine life and coastal areas. Not only would this be devastating to Cuba’s marine life, but given the biological connections present in the Gulf of Mexico, such an impact could affect a myriad of species, including fish, sea turtles, dolphins, manatees, sharks, corals inhabiting the waters of the U.S., Mexico and beyond. We are regularly updating our Cuba at Risk page on the 1planet1ocean site with the latest information about the spill and its potential impact on Cuba.

We’re working around the clock to help our Cuban colleagues prepare for the possibility of an oil spill from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. None of this work was anticipated and there’s much to do, so we urgently need your help to fund our efforts and ensure that we’re prepared in advance should the worst occur.
